The weekend of April 17-19, Stuart MacLean's The Vinyl Cafe featured the music of the late Willie P. Bennett. From the Vinyl Cafe web site: "Stuart pays tribute to Canadian singer-songwriter Willie P. Bennett by playing an unreleased song sung by Willie P. - the last recording Willie ever made." As many of you know, Charlie wrote that song, Black Against the Wall.

Together with so many others in the folk/roots community, Charlie and his associates mourn the recent passing of Willie P. Bennett. He was an amazing songwriter, an inspiration and a fine human being. The time spent last fall recording Charlie's song, Black Against the Wall, will be treasured. |
Charlie Sohmer was awarded a grand prize in the 2007 OCFF Songs From the Heart Awards. His work, Marie Anne Lagimodiere, was chosen as the best French song in the competition, which is open to all Ontario songwriters. Charlie played the song, along with the members of Frida's Brow, during the 21st annual conference of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, held in London, ON from October 11 to 14. He received his grand prize from Roch Parisien, of Galaxie, CBC's network of continuous music.

The song, written by Charlie Sohmer, is a story about an old soldier looking back in time, recalling battles and friends, long gone. Charlie was interviewed by CFRA radio's Ron Corbett a few days before the official commemorations. It was given its "World Radio Premiere" on CKCU FM's Canadian Spaces show with Chopper McKinnon.
